The death of Phoenix.

Three years ago I had the worst of times in the Phoenix Hostel. The owner behaved like a nazi camp commander, rules everywhere, ordered you to shower on arrival, prohibited smoking in open places, but suddenly would change the rule, etc. She confessed she hated men and hadn't had sex for ten years. And then she seemed to like me. It is difficult to know how to behave when a shark smiles at you...
This time the hundreds of prohibition signs are gone. I asked a girl who showed up the second day if she work there. She said, "I am the owner". Mary. The daughter of the woman I met here three years ago. On my second day, Mary asks me if I can do the barbecue. I do. Argentinian style. Charcoal and wood. She agrees. I buy the meat and she the salads and the wine. Argentinian style. The asado is a success. I get cheers from my ten guests (no "un aplauso para el asador" though).
From then on, they refuse to charge me for my stay. Do you get it? No charge! I do for them ceviche. Big success again. I bake bread. I feel that I can do again what I like most, sharing. Mary says to me that I am the kind of guests that brings good vibes to the place. The vibes hated by Lisa in Flagstaff are welcome here in Phoenix. Oh, well. You see? I was weary about coming back to Phoenix and now sad to leave. Phoenix was dead. Now it's alive in my heart. That's what Phoenixes do, right?

Black Phoenix.

Sufferers recognize sufferers. In pain, they come to you, they look in your eyes and they can see your soul. And they show theirs. And you don't feel alone any more. There are peoples who are meant to be sufferers, the blacks, the natives, the jews... When they come to me, I know they've been sent to me. They are messengers that are here to help.
The same year I went to that first Jethro Tull concert in London I had this first experience with a black woman. I was in an underground train and this beautiful black girl was staring at me, seductive. I panicked. I could not overcome my prejudice and I turned my back to her. I was 17. For years I felt bad about it. Many years later, on my last trip with Julieta, we were waiting for the underground train in Paris. I walked away from her for some minutes and then back, to watch her in an intense conversation with a black kid. The kid was hitting on her, and she was all smiles and laughs. She looked at me, question mark and weary about my reaction. I winked at her, turned around and let her do whatever she wanted. I felt good. Julieta's lack of prejudice was my redemption.
Yesterday I was parked in my car when a black woman passed by. We smiled at each other. She came to me, asked if she could step into the car. I said yes. She is beautiful. Her face has scars of a bad life. We talk. I know that she is open for trade. I don't know if I could. She asks me for money. I give her 5 bucks. She gives me a sweet kiss in the cheek. This time I don't feel the racial prejudice. But I wouldn't have sex for money. I wouldn't even have sex for sex's sake. You see, many are looking for fun. I am looking for joy. Many are looking for sex. I am looking for love.

I went biking to the theater. Phoenix is great for biking. Downtown is deserted after five, you have all the streets and walkways for yourself. Ha, you really feel you owns the place. When arrived, I realize that this is a one person show of a locally well know personality. Black personality. The audience is 99% black. The other half percent is a member of the production staff. In these situations, like when I found myself and my friend Jerry the only whities invited to a Hopi ceremony, I feel very weary about doing something wrong. Or calling anyone's attention. Back then, in the Hopi Kachina ceremony, a huge Kachina customed Hopi man came to me and gave me a present: a biscuit. I felt accepted and welcomed and honored. While I was about to buy the $40 expensive ticket at the theater, a black woman came to me and offered me a ticket for free. Such a good feeling again. Beautiful, my age and very intelligent, she explained all I needed to know about Fatima, the artist.
The show was good. Do you want to know more? It was excellent. More? I was moved. I confess that "Juliette must die" was an encoded message for me, not sure if I wanted to decode. Fatima and Juliette are two sides of the same person. One is spiritual and full of rites and search for god. The other is sluty and real, suffers and struggles with life and life for a black woman in America is hell. Fatima wants to exorcize angry Juliette, Jul;iette's death is metaphoric. At the end, Fatima acknowledges that she can't and won't kill Juliette. As well as I won't.
At the end of the show, there was a Q&A session. None. People would stand up, open their hearts, and show their emotions with such a high human quality...
I don't experience this flow of empathy with whities. I have with natives, with blacks, even with chicanos. Land of the free, home of the brave! Your soul, your courage, your future is negromulatomestizoindiolatinochicano!

An other Phoenix.

Back in Phoenix. What for? What's here for me this time?
Well, first, the Jethro Tull concert. OK, maybe I did had expectations. For example, that I wrote to Ian Anderson and asked him to dedicate me the concert. After all, I was the only one of the thousands there who attended the first Aqualung concert back in London 40 years ago! And this happened to be the Agualung 40th Anniversary Tour. Not a hint of that. Ian was... not there. He does all the moves, but his heart is not there. Neither his mind, haha, he failed his entry in the Agualung song. Wut? This guy has played this song thousands of times and misses his entry? I think he's too old to rock and roll. I was very impressed by Martin Barre though. He is playing better than ever, he doesn't play it like a rock star and you can feel his enjoyment. Thanks Martin!
I remember my first time in the Phoenix Hostel. The owner commanded me to take a shower on arrival. This time she is not here, but the English manager put my sandals outside. "You have stinkfoot. Stinkfoot, darling, your feet put a hurt on my nose!" Oh well, it's true. At 40 C and 5 % humidity, you are sweating like a horse but you don't realize it. But your shoes keep accumulating torrents of sweat. My feet stink, my shoes still worse. The Englishman has a point.
And now the signs. When I left Flagstaff, again shuffling I-tunes synchronized, out of 13,000 songs, "Y volver, volver, vooolveeer!" Humm...
Then, first thing I noticed when entering the Hostel is an ad for a play tonight: "Juliette must die"... Humm, I will try to attend it today. I was thinking of this and again the radio synchronizes Julieta's Benegas "Eres para mí". OK,OK,OK! I don't know why, I don't what for, but I am back in Phoenix. And I flow, flow, flow. May the gods help me. A couple of nights ago I dream with Julieta. She comes to me, beautiful, sits on my lap, we embrace each other and she says: "Sometimes I like to be alive for a while". Sometimes I feel that she does, through me.

Deflagstaffed.

With Julia under surgery, I am forced to try my new old bicycle... first time in two years! I'm almost as good as I was before the accident. It is also the first time I feel almost normal. The same as when swimming. No es poco.
The hostile hostel owner Lisa gives instructions that I must leave the premises by Friday 3rd. She rejects my appeal arguing that "rules are rules". Hum... My first time, I was allowed to stay 2 weeks, my second, three months, my third, four days, my fourth, two months, this time, ten days... help my friends! Can anyone find the pattern of the rule for me? Truth is, they don't like me. Why? I am a bad example for the staff. Oh well, if the powerful dislike me, I like it.
Anyways, this can't be bad, June 3rd is Juli's birthday. I invite Japanese Asami, Malaysian  Rafma and Romanian Ioana for dinner. These girls understand and celebrate with me.
My new home is a weekly rent motel room. Not too bad. It's way off downtown, but has everything I need plus a Farmers Market and a new pool and gymnasium complex nearby.
Flagstaff is not my town anymore. My friends are gone, I can hardly find a Diné or Hopi in the streets, the artisans and hippies are nowhere to be seen. This town is going steady to the right, and that's not right for me. But I am thankful though. This place dramatically  changed my life for better three years ago. Now, it is helping me realize that I have changed too. I miss La Malfatta. I miss my friends at La Malfatta. I miss the love and freedom that we all shared back there. Thanks Lisa, thanks Flagstaff. I am over you.

Hibyehi Flagstaff!

So I'm back to my beloved Du Beau Hostel to find it's not my beloved any more. More rules, the good friends are gone, the guests and staff are mostly local. Hmmm. Seems to me I won't stay here for long this time. I feel that I'm less than welcome, just tolerated.
Anyway, I decide to spend some time and money on Julia. Fixing this and that and finally found the place to buy Julia brand new shoes! 255-70R18 new Cooper tires. Cost a little fortune, but they are wider, smoother and with a better grip. Princess Julia looks lovely. So Klyff and I decide to premier Julia's new shoes (and my own, I bought myself a new pair of leather sandals for the date) going to the Diné Res next morning. We invite Mick. Mick is an Aussie adventurer, late 40's, energetic, emphatic, a sacred flamed guy. I don't understand a shit of what he says, thick accent, but I enjoy his conversation. My old friend Mike wants to join us but next morning fails to wake up in time. So here we go, again, me driving novices to the land I always come back to.
First stop, my mountain. My first and only mountain I ever climbed. It is close to (my Dine friend) Jack's ranch. Jack is not there. I look at my mountain and wonder where did I found the courage to climb it, three years ago. Now, will I ever be able to find that courage, and a good left knee to do it again? You never now, eh?
Mick is sensitive. I tell the guys if they would like to hike the mountain a bit. Mick asks:" Is this a spiritual place for the natives?" I say yes. "Then I won't without being invited". Cool guy. He knows the ways.
I drive them to the Hopi  Res, a quick visit to the Hopi Cultural Center, and a quick rush back to Flagstaff to watch the Champions League finals. On our way back, a desert storm blinds us now and then and slows our pace. We arrive to Flagstaff in time to watch the last minutes of the game.
Klyff comes from the hostel with bad news. We have no room at the hostel because we didn't give notice we were staying. Come on, guys! You know me! I left my stuff, I didn't check out, I still have the keys... Not one could think that I would stay? I feel expelled. Ok, I say to Klyff, this means we have to go.
We pack our things, jump into Julia and start our way down to Baja. I say good bye to no one except to Mitch, my good old spiritual teacher.
I don't feel good about leaving like this. While I'm driving I think: Oh well, If it is meant to be, it will. If not....
Julia's transmission stops working. We end up at the road side, waiting for a tow, hahaha, back to Flagstaff!. The tow truck driver is Larry,  older than me, with a stiff leg like me. How did you get that bad leg? Motorbike accident like me. What bike? A Harley, like mine. What color is you bike? Purple, like mine. Klyff looks at me amazed and starts to believe there's not such thing as coincidence. As for me, well, if Julia and the gods don't want me out of this land yet, here I am. After all, this is what life is all about. Expect nothing but the unexpected.
A year ago I was in Intensive Care fighting for my life. Now I am stranded in Arizona with a broken Julia. Ha! Ha! Ha! Life is good.

Back in the U.S.A.!

Klyff, my CSer road buddy, Tyler, a Sandiegan hitch hiker we picked up in the middle of nothing close to Manning Park, B.C., and I hit the border close to Osoyoos. I expected a long struggle and a series of funny questions about my personal life, and of course, a complete check of La Julia. After all, our looks justifies being suspected of everything considered illegal in the States. None of that. Two minutes and we where in! What! Have I lost my aura? Is this a sign? Sincronicity showed up in my shuffling I-tunes music: "Y volver, volver, voooollllveeeer!". Yes I'm back, I'm back, I'M BACK!
We had left rainy Vancouver looking for the sun. None. All our way into the U.S. and then all our way East from Washington State, Idaho, Montana and Utah, rain, cloudy skies, no sun, no sun, no sun. Even in Moab, Utah, we had alternate showers and sun. I feel urged to go back to Flagstaff. Klyff is OK. But then he mentions the sacred place: "Pity we can't make it to Monument Valley". My place. He doesn't know that, he doesn't know that Monument Valley is a slight divertion in our way to Flagstaff. I roll my dice. Six, six and six. That's an emphatic YES! So Monument Valley it is.
We drive there and we have enough time for me to show him my favorite spots. I do have time to go to my very special place and do my rituals. I do them. I can't stop crying.
We camp. I sleep in La Julia, Klyff in a tent. Early in the morning I get a wake up call from a horse. The sun is about to rise. I get up and get ready for my morning rituals to welcome the sun. And there he is! Beautiful, warm, welcoming. Not a cloud in the sky. My first full sunny day since I came from Argentina.
I am back.

Baking for someone...

OK! So I got fed up of rainy Vancouver, jumped into La Julia and drove to sunny Whistler. Guess what! It was pouring in Whistler. Ok. Nevermind. Let's take a look to post olympics Whistler and its new hostel. It is big. It is modern. It is the Sheraton of all hostels. It is pretty deserted too. Just a bunch of English kids here and there. The room is very comfortable and even has a welcome sample of Axe toiletries. Sheraton...
The kitchen is all modern and gadgets stuffed. I decide to make some bread to share with my co-guests. I prepare the dough and go to bed.
Next morning after a nice shower I start with the bread baking in a... very little grill mini oven. How come! No real oven! What is going on? Only microwave? Give me a brake!
I had to bake almost each loaf one by one in the mini grill. OK. Just a new challenge. The bread was good. I waited for people to show up at the dinning room. Very few showed up. Only one girl accepted my invitation, and cut a tiny slice of bread. Another kid rejected my bread, saying: "No thanks. I have my own (industrial, preserved and old) bread". What?! He doesn't even want to try my out of the oven warm home bread? What's wrong with this world?
I was defeated. Still raining in Whistler, all wet and grey, I decided to go back to Vancouver. On my way out, I stopped at the hostel's coffee shop and offered the bread to the guy there. He was all smiles and thanks. I appreciated that, Dave! You made my day!

Tercera Parte: Mi Amigo Jacinto versus Blaise Pascal.

(Target)
¿Qué quiero decirle ? (Beneficio)
¿Cómo se lo digo? (Idea creativa)
¿Cuándo y dónde ? (Medios)

Civilization.

“Civilization is the coexistence of the diverse”, Claude Levi-Strauss.

Statistics Canada and Mr. Collacott (Vancouver Sun, March 29th) have entered into a polemic arena that, to say the least, adds very little to clarify us what is really going on in Canada, and where we are heading to. For a start, the term “visible minority” is disgusting. Is, by definition, a racist concept. The reader may find this better explained in “Portrait of an anti-Semitic”, by Jean Paul Sartre. I would like to recall a single phrase from it: “If there were no Jews, the anti-Semitic would invent them”. Statistics Canada is inventing the “visible minority”, and worst, going further to warn us about a future “visible majority”. Mr. Collacott  reacts within the same frame of thought. Rather than through statistics, or linear projections, I will try to make a point in the Chinese way, that is, through stories.
A man, “visibly” Caucasian, in his 60, born in Europe and settled in Canada in 1982 asks a “visibly” Chinese girl, aged 28: “Hi, where are you from?” The girl looks at him and patiently replies: “Canada”.
A “Friends” episode. One of the characters plans to go to China, a second says: “Hey, there you can look for a good Chinese restaurant”. A third character adds: “Only that over there they are not Chinese, they’re just restaurants”.
One from Lin Yutang: “Two men, one “visibly” Occidental, the other “visibly” Oriental, enter the jungle. Suddenly a very strange animal appears in sight. The Occidental tries to figure out to what family of animals this creature belongs to. The “visibly” Oriental, in which sauce would he cook it”.
The Chinese name for the United States does not mean “United States”, but “Beautiful Land”.
My point is: we don’t understand. And there is no point in discussing what we don’t know. It is appalling that a man like Mr. Collacot, who has been ambassador in Asia, not only dictates that we need more doctors, but that not even understands the racism implicit in this phrase. Are we ready to accept and embrace Chinese medicine? Are we eager to develop a health system (and business) based on prevention rather than one that needs sick people to function? What kind of doctors is Mr. Collacot willing to “import”?
Canada is an experiment. It is an Idea trying to become Fact. I can only recall one of such experiments proved successful. Centuries ago, in an Europe were Germans, French and Italians kept fighting each other, a singular land of coexistence and peace was founded: Switzerland.
Now Canada is at the crossroads. Statistics Canada and the Mr’s Collacots are not helping. What we need is a better understanding, which means better Education. And better Education does not mean better Education for Immigrants to integrate to our Society, but better Education for each of us to understand the Other. We need Knowledge to overcome Fear.
If successful, the Canadian experience will stand there, for centuries, for all to see and learn. And the Maple Leaf will stand not for a particular country, but for an Universal Idea turned into Fact.
